EaKmat Hoa Dong – Fair Trade Coffee from the Highlands of Buon Ma Thuot
Located in Hoa Thang Commune, Buon Ma Thuot City – an area blessed with fertile basalt soils and a favorable climate – EaKmat Hoa Dong Agricultural Service Cooperative is one of Dak Lak’s largest coffee-growing cooperatives, cultivating over 460 hectares with the participation of 99 farming households, 93% of whom are from ethnic minority groups.
Established in 2014, the cooperative was born out of a mission to transform traditional, fragmented coffee farming into a sustainable, high-quality production model. Through the Vietnam Sustainable Agriculture Transformation (VnSAT) Project, EaKmat Hoa Dong implemented large-scale coffee replanting, replacing old, low-yield trees with disease-free, high-yield varieties. Members receive ongoing training in sustainable farming, balanced fertilization, climate resilience, and post-harvest processing – ensuring compliance with international Fair Trade standards.
The results have been remarkable: yields have doubled from 1.8–2 tons to 4 tons per hectare in the first harvest after replanting, while quality has improved significantly. Supported by over VND 7 billion in infrastructure investment, the cooperative now operates with modern roads, warehouses, drying yards, and processing facilities. Each stage – from selective hand-picking of ripe cherries to careful roasting at 200–240°C – is carried out with precision, producing more than 300 tons of premium coffee beans for export each year.
Beyond economic growth, EaKmat Hoa Dong is deeply committed to community welfare – donating to schools, providing gifts for children, supporting disadvantaged families, organizing blood drives, and joining environmental clean-up efforts. This blend of sustainable farming, quality coffee, and social responsibility makes EaKmat Hoa Dong a model for both economic and community development in Vietnam’s Central Highlands.
